## Activities from the network members
**Kevin Murray** participated in a craft summit at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale. His paper _“A place in the book of mankind”: Global structures of local identity_ can be found [here](https://preview.mailerlite.io/te/cl/eyJ2Ijoie1wiYVwiOjQ0MjgxNSxcImxcIjoxMDQyNjE0MDc3OTU1NzgxNzAsXCJyXCI6MTA0MjYxNDA5NzE2NTY5MjIyfSIsInMiOiIwZjZmMjM5ZDNlNTNiY2U5In0).
**Rebecca Hannon**, co-director of the [Alfoldy Craft Institute at NSCAD University](https://preview.mailerlite.io/te/cl/eyJ2Ijoie1wiYVwiOjQ0MjgxNSxcImxcIjoxMDQyNjE0MDc4MDA4MjEwNTMsXCJyXCI6MTA0MjYxNDA5NzE2NTY5MjIyfSIsInMiOiIwZTU2MDFkZmVjNWI0M2MwIn0) in Halifax, Nova Scotia will be giving a free online talk as part of a series of presentations exploring color-based research in a variety of fields by the [Colour Research Society of Canada (CRSC)](https://preview.mailerlite.io/te/cl/eyJ2Ijoie1wiYVwiOjQ0MjgxNSxcImxcIjoxMDQyNjE0MDc4MDYwNjM5MzQsXCJyXCI6MTA0MjYxNDA5NzE2NTY5MjIyfSIsInMiOiJkMTY3YjYwNDc1NjBiMTc0In0) . Rebecca's talk weaves together threads of warning coloration and mimicry found in the natural world into the phenomena of "_Dazzle Camouflage_" used on ships during WWI, explored through contemporary adornment.

It can be mined for many interesting insights, such as “The design of Gutenberg’s type was a modified version of the handwriting most widely used for the formal documents of the day, which, because its strong vertical and horizontal lines give the finished page the look of a woven material, is known as textura.” While very readable, it doesn’t provide an overarching theory for the knowledge project. You’ll need a Foucault for that.

Garland magazine’s issues for 2024 have been announced, which are inspired by the spatial framework for contemporary jewellery developed in the Art Jewelry Forum publication Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective. The four spaces are street, land, table and temple. This is part of a broader agenda to acknowledge the creative value of work that occurs outside the gallery. However, such signs have gradually disappeared over the years, along with the craftsmen who spent decades mastering the craft of blowing neon lights. In this 2022 film, director Anastasia Tsang revives this long-time tradition in her poignant directorial debut, telling the touching story of a widow who discovers secrets her late husband Bill buried within his neon lights workshop. While reminiscing about Bill, she sets out to fulfill his final wish of recreating a famous demolished neon sign with the help of Bill’s young protégé. Dedicated to the pursuit of handicrafts quality for today and the future, the Museum sponsors an annual competition, display, and sale of handmade objects by craftspeople. Anyone can participate in the competition. The categories are: ceramics, textiles (weaving and dyeing), wood work, lacquered ware, metal, bamboo, straw, glass, paper, and others.
