> [!SUMMARY] Summary
> A house conversation considered how to value craft located outside the art gallery. Many positive proposals were made that warrant future work.
## Salutation
The salutation was offered by [[Atefe Mirsane]]
از کوزهگری کوزه خریدم باری
آن کوزه سخن گفت ز هر اسراری
شاهی بودم که جام زرینم بود
اکنون شدهام کوزه هر خماری
> Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend,
> Before we too into the Dust descend;
> Dust into Dust, and under Dust to lie,
> Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer, and—sans End!"
Omar Khayyam
## Summary
The purpose of this conversation was to address the limits of the art gallery as a space for valuing craft. These limits include the way experience is restricted to the visual sense and objects are presented as representations of the world, rather than things to be used in it.
[[Benjamin Lignel]], Monica Gaspar and [[Kevin Murray]] spoke about the workshop in 2011 convened by Damian Skinner, including Namita Wiggers, which developed a spatial framework for understanding contemporary jewellery. This involved focusing on the spaces of plinth, page, bench, drawer, body and street. See [[Spatial framework for contemporary jewelry]]

This was followed by reflections by the guest editors of the [street](https://garlandmag.com/issue-34/ ) (Melissa Cameron), [land](https://garlandmag.com/issue-35/ ) (Angie Martin) and [temple](https://garlandmag.com/issue-37/ ) (Pamela See) issues of Garland magazine, which were part of the *[Together Spaces](https://garlandmag.com/2024-together/ )* series. The editors reflected on the diversity of interests and community engagement in spaces beyond the gallery.
The art gallery is part of the broader institution of agents and resources that grant value to the works that are displayed. This includes the curator, catalogue, collector, patron, magazine, monograph, university lecturer and funding body. There are relatively few instruments with which to ascribe cultural capital to what appears outside the gallery.
A number of possibilities emerged in the conversation to address this lack:
- Developing events such as ceremonies in non-gallery spaces (such as a sensorium)
- Writers and curators with the curiosity to work in those spaces (such as [[LOkesh Ghai]])
- Facilitating pathways between those spaces and the gallery, even literally with windows in the gallery facing the street
- Considering non-spaces such as the screen as an antithesis by which to better appreciate the gallery as one space among many
