What counts as a craft may different between cultures. For some, a craft needs to result in a durable object. In others, it can be something relatively consumable, such as perfume.
Nonetheless, there needs to be a framework that can accommodate these differences.
These are the proposed primary criteria for a craft:
- **Skilled manual work** transforming materials
- **Cultural value** within the community
- **Technical sophistication** beyond everyday activities
- **Material outcomes** that demonstrate the skill
> A craft involves skilled manual work in transforming materials into objects of cultural value.
These are secondary considerations that can be applied flexibly:
- **Historical depth** - long-standing vs. emerging practices
- **Economic role** - livelihood, ceremonial, or personal use
- **Geographic specificity** - practices unique to or characteristic of particular regions
- **Contemporary relevance** - active practice vs. historical documentation
> Additionally, craft may maintain cultural traditions, be distinctive to particular places, contribute economically, and have contemporary relevance.
