Roughly translated, the word 'craft' in Sanskrit, Hindi and other languages that emerge from Sanskrit, is "shilp". Shilp means more than just 'craft', it means the skill to design, to make, to create. Some people associate this word with sculpture, some with architecture, but overall it signifies ' creation', 'making', 'crafting'. The Indian craftsman has an association with his consciousness, his calling in the creator, the 'Brahma', the 'vishwakarma', he doesn't call the craft, merely his work, but a work of generations put together. He bows to the creator, 'vishwakarma', who inspires him to create. The craftsman is called 'shilpi' and the craftswoman is 'shilpini'. The ancient texts that speak about the knowledge of arts and crafts, including science and techniques are referred to as 'shilp shastra', where shilp = art / craft/ design and shastra = knowledge/ science / text.
