### About
Aarti Kawlra is an anthropologist interested in the methods of oral history, geography and cultural studies to interrogate colonial, postcolonial and global discourses of culture, heritage, education, and development. She has a passion for artisanship and the lived experience of makers which was initiated way back in 1988 during her work with the ‘Saris of India’ project in Tamil Nadu when she travelled to nearly 98 weaving villages in South India. Her research has led to a plethora of academic publications, for example her most recent one is : “Narrating indigo: Telling and re-telling subjectivities of craft in India” in *Ways of Studying Craft* edited by Chandan Bose and Mira Mohsini, Routledge (forthcoming).
Aarti Kawlra has a long term interest in using craft as a methodological entry point to research. She was the co-principal investigator of the “Craft in the discourse of caste-based education in 20th century south India”, at Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) Chennai, 2016-2019. She has taught at many Design Schools in India and also at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras. Despite this acclaim and her current status as Academic Director of the program “[[Humanities Across Borders]]: Asia and Africa in the world” (HAB) at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden The Netherlands and Affiliated Researcher at the French Institute in Pondicherry, India, she has always seen herself as more of an educator than an academic. This is evident in her current role in supporting academia-society exchanges around food, place-making, storytelling and craft-practice, in response to environmental and social urgencies, with the HAB network of partners in Asia, Africa, Europe and USA.
She is currently working on a book project on craft and education in the global politics of culture and sustainability in south India. Aarti’s insight into humanity through the lens of craft, brings a wealth of knowledge, understanding and compassion to scholarship in this field.
