In a world increasingly governed by economic profit, lives are being flattened to 24/7 time. There is decreasing space for the rituals that give life meaning. As philosophy Byung-Chul Han (2022) says, “a world that is completely without rituals and wholly profane, all that is left are consumption and the satisfaction of needs.”
Craft stands out as a domain that has “intrinsic value”. A well-crafted object is made with enjoyment and pride. Made with human hands, it provides a tangible sense of worth. For many religions, craftsmanship has a spiritual value in itself.
The Baha’i faith has inspired many craft practitioners, particularly one of the most influential figures of twentieth-century craft, the potter, Bernard Leach. One of its principles is the quest for perfection as an ethical ideal.
