### Outline
- Craft is more likely to involve local materials and distribution.
- Craft process is more conducive to the processing of waste materials.
- Craft uses local source of materials with smaller footprint
Craft practitioners, particularly traditional and rural-based makers, tend to be small-scale, lean toward using materials that are locally sourced, readily available and employ methods less detrimental to the environment.
Vanderploeg and Lee (2019) suggest this behaviour shows how inherently committed many of these makers are to environmental responsibility.
As reporting on an Indigenous Mexican craft collective highlights (Suarez del Real, 2021), this can lead to craft makers valuing – and wanting to preserve and protect – natural heritage, traditions, resources and the environment over mass producing objects for commercial gain. “We said no,” Doñú says. “Our production is not industrial. To fulfill a request of that volume, we would have to overexploit the land.”
Many mass production processes degrade the environment and undermine practitioner livelihoods and drive to do meaningful work because they are so focused on maximising profit.
Craft can challenge the economic, social, cultural and environmental sustainability problems those mainstream processes present (Gálvez-Sánchez et al, 2021).
Visual artist and paper maker Joanne Kaar (2020) revels in slow creation using what’s naturally available around her and traditional methods. Being sustainable is a priority for her. “It’s down to wanting to keep costs down, being flexible in my choices of materials that are available and continually learning how to best use them by learning from the past and traditional techniques as well as working with the seasons, while being able to live where I’m inspired.”
