>[!INFO] >Type:: [[Claims]] ValueofCraft:: [[Peace and justice value of craft]] The term craftivism is well known in the craft community. One example is the Pussyhat Project in the United States, wherein handknit pink hats were made and worn by thousands of participants for the Women’s March in Washington, DC, January 2017. However, there are less-public instances in which craft has served to bring political recognition to marginalized groups. Geoffrey Gowlland, during his research on Indigenous peoples in Taiwan, discovered that the Kavalan people of the broader Amis Indigenous designation, were unique in their practice of banana fibre weaving. Evidence of this distinction was used in a petition claiming discrete status, rather than inclusion in the wider pool of indigeneity. Gowlland writes: “In their petition to the government for recognition as a separate indigenous group, one factor was the revival of a form of weaving that … was only produced by the Kavalan...After its successful use in their petition to the government, the weaving practice has taken on a life of its own.” (Gowlland, 2021: 60)   ![[Attachments/98634356d4cf7adc3656585fb107d69e_MD5.png]] ### References %% DATAVIEW_PUBLISHER: start ```dataview list summary from [[Claim - Craft provides a peaceful means of championing justice.]] where contains(file.path,"Warp") ``` %% - [[Warp/67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.md|67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day]]: 67 Blankets is a movement involving knitting and crocheting blankets for social justice. - [[Warp/Activists Unfurl Massive Quilt for Gaza on Met Museum Steps.md|Activists Unfurl Massive Quilt for Gaza on Met Museum Steps]]: “From Occupation to Liberation” quilt made from 65 art works. - [[Warp/Dream versus reality - Disarming Design.md|Dream versus reality - Disarming Design]]: A team of Jordanian, Palestinian and Dutch designers collaborated with local craftswomen and men from the Gaza refugee camp in the Jordan city Jerash, to develop a series of thought provoking products. - [[Warp/I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few.md|I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few]]: The Arts & Crafts Movement saw craft as an essentially egalitarian activity. - [[Warp/Interweaving the Archive A Homage to Brave Women.md|Interweaving the Archive A Homage to Brave Women]]: A Chilean collective has woven tapestries that honour the struggle for justice led by women. - [[Warp/Madeleine Albright on Her Life in Pins.md|Madeleine Albright on Her Life in Pins]]: Albright describes how she uses her brooches to deal with delicate diplomatic actions.
