### Outline
Making objects by hand with materials demands sensitivity and patience. Makers need to be especially alert to the variability of organic materials, such as the grain of wood, the plasticity of clay and the breaking point of fibre. Such sensitivity carries over to how we deal with other people. It fosters the patience necessary to understand the other person’s perspective and feelings.
Bunn (2014) also claims that social interactions between makers and materials contribute to the rich texture of people’s relationships, which include sensorial engagements with the world beyond the human.
For Japanese philosopher Yuriko Saito (2017), the bodily and sensory experiences embedded in social life, including in the making and using of objects, are a crucial way by which we express and cultivate care, considerateness, sensitivity, and respect to human and non-human others. This highlights how our relationships with materials and objects can mirror our relationships with the people around us and the world at large.
