### Note
Manipulating the material world directly by hand is a key part of mental development through life. It is especially important childhood cognitive development. Adult learning is enhanced by physical activity like handwriting. And making is an important part of trauma recovery.
The leading child psychologist Jean Piaget (1954) argues that sensorimotor experiences are critical in early childhood development. Completing physical tasks teaches the patience required for more abstract tasks such as problem-solving.
A University of Tokyo study (Umejima et al., 2021) found writing on physical paper can lead to more brain activity when remembering the information an hour later. Researchers say that the unique, complex, spatial and tactile information associated with writing by hand on physical paper leads to improved memory.
