Founded in 1996 as an inter-institutional public service centre of the University of North Carolina, it gained independent 501(c)(3) status in 1998 and became fully independent of the university in 2013, when a gift from the Windgate Foundation allowed it to purchase its own historic building in downtown Asheville. The Center supports research, critical dialogue and professional development through several national grant and fellowship programs, including the long-running Craft Research Fund and the Craft Archive Fellowship, which backs archival research into underrepresented craft histories. It has distributed more than eight million dollars in grants and fellowships to craft artists, researchers and scholars to date. At its Asheville headquarters the Center runs a gallery and study collection, convenes national meetings, curates exhibitions and hosts lectures, workshops and international residencies. It has also played a significant recovery role for craft artists in Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene, mobilising over a million dollars in emergency relief. Garland magazine profiled the Center in a piece on its rebuilding after separating from the university.
